From the career of Amavisca, nicknamed the "Puñal de Laredo", as an international, it should be noted that he was one of the members of the Olympic Team in the 1992 Olympic Games, which won gold against Poland. Two years later, he debuted with the Spanish National Team in a Cyprus-Spain (1-2), where he played fifteen games. The good repercussion of him catapulted him to Euro Cup 1996.

In the national league, the first team on the left interior was Club Deportivo Laredo. He made his debut in the first division with Real Valladolid in the 1989/1990 season. He is later signed by Real Valladolid Promises. After he passed through this last formation, he was loaned to Lleida. His excellent performance that year, he played a total of 36 games and scored 14 goals, allowed him to return to the first division at Real Valladolid where he remained until 1994.

Real Madrid signed him in the 1994/1995 season. His good performance made him stay at the white club, that year he scored ten goals, he formed an attacking partner with the Chilean, Iván Zamorano. He was one of the key players in winning the league title. The following seasons he continued to play regularly for Real Madrid, winning another league and the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League and the 1998 Intercontinental Cup. The following year, he moved to Racing Santander.

He continued with the Cantabrian club and started the following three seasons. His play led Deportivo de La Coruña to sign him in 2001. With the Galicians winning the Copa del Rey in 2002, he remained with the team until the end of the 2003/2004 season. He closed his last two seasons as a professional at Espanyol. For his sporting work, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Cantabrian Sports, which shares another recognition of the same category that was awarded to him by the Junta de Castilla y León.

When he hung up his boots he became a football editor, signing opinion articles and interviews for the Cantabrian newspaper: “El Diario Montañés”. Professional work that combines with that of commentator of the radio program "Tablero Deportivo" of Radio Nacional de España (RNE). Likewise, he is the director of the Santander Municipal Soccer School, for eleven years.

From football to the proclamation. Amavisca gave the starting signal as the preacher of honor of the festivities of San Juan Bautista in June 2022 in Santovenia, a town in Valladolid. In the proclamation he declared: “I feel very happy that you have remembered me after so many years of leaving football and having gone through Pucela, which returns to the first division. I hope you are very happy and proud of it."
